Lightning / Thunder Guidelines
Youth sports lightning protocols mandate immediate cessation of play upon hearing thunder or seeing lightning. All participants and spectators must move to safe, fully enclosed buildings or hard-topped metal vehicles. A 30-minute waiting period must be observed after the last flash or thunder, resetting with each new occurrence.
Key Procedures:
- When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors: Immediately evacuate open fields and dugouts to a safe structure.
- 30-Minute Rule: Wait at least 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning or sound of thunder before returning to the field.
- Reset Rule: The 30-minute timer restarts if any new thunder/lightning occurs.
- Safe Shelters: Fully enclosed buildings with wiring and plumbing, or fully enclosed metal-topped vehicles with windows rolled up.
- Unsafe Areas: Dugouts, rain shelters, trees, open garages, and bleachers.
- Monitoring: Designated personnel will be umpires and coaches.
