Walter J. Pileggi, known to all of us as "Walt", suffered a massive stroke on October 16, 2006 and died two days later. Walt had become a fixture within the organization. Not only would he be seen coaching "his girls", but anytime the league needed something, Walt would come to the rescue. In 2005, the league was looking for a tractor to use for dragging the fields. Walt had a friend who owed him some money and also was looking to sell a tractor. So Walt traded the debt for the tractor, and the next thing you know, the Media Area Girls Softball had a tractor in our shed that we can now use for field maintenance. This is just one example of the things Walt did.

In 2008, at the suggestion of our founding president, Pete Thomas, the league voted to establish the Walter J. Pileggi Memorial Scholarship. This $1000 scholarship will be awarded to a graduating High School senior who has played in our organization and is choosing to further her academic education at a secondary institute of learning. The winner will be announced at the end of each school year.  Any girl who meets these requirements is encouraged to fill out an application and submit it to their guidance counselor.

How Coach Pileggi Got Started in MAGS:

It was a Saturday afternoon and I was always the one who took our girls to any of their activities. Walt was always working. I had been told that Domenica's team needed to stop at the field just to get their practice schedule. I had called Walter and asked him if he wanted to have lunch with us and he said "sure, pick me up at the office". So, I picked him up, told him we just had to take Domenica to the field for a minute to pick up her schedule and we are off. Parking was impossible so I asked Walter to just run her down to meet her Coach and pick up the practice schedule. He grumbled, but agreed. I circled many times and finally found a parking space. I waited and waited. Finally, Domenica came running to the car with a smile ear to ear and Walt followed her sort of shaking his head. When the door opened Domenica shouted...Daddy's our Coach...I said, "No he's not"....and Walt looked at me with a look that could kill. He then said that he was the only Dad on the field and either Pete or Ken Parks was there to say that if no one stepped up to Coach this team then they didn't have one....and all those little girls looked right at Walt....he said No a number of times and then he was had.

It was so funny to watch him the first year....the girls loved him, he couldn't do anything wrong in their eyes.....and then the next year he began to fall in love with Coaching "his team". It was probably one of the best times he had in his life. We made lifelong friends and became so much closer to our daughters friends.
